Demand for arrest of former PM Mahinda Rajapaksa intensifies, lawyer files petition in court

Sri Lanka: Violence erupting during protests in Sri Lanka has now reached court. A lawyer has filed a petition in a Colombo court seeking the arrest of seven people, including a former prime minister. The CID should immediately order the arrest of seven people, including former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the lawyer said in the petition.

In fact, former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has been accused of inciting his supporters to hold peaceful protests. More than 100 people were seriously injured in the clashes. At the same time, seeing the violent atmosphere, the army marched and ordered them to shoot. Mahinda Rajapaksa had to resign as Prime Minister due to the financial crisis.

Can’t leave country – Court bans

Meanwhile, a Sri Lankan court has banned former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and 12 of his leaders from leaving the country. At the same time, security was provided to Mahinda in the wake of nationwide protests. Opposition parties have been demanding Mahinda’s arrest. Mahinda was the President of the country from 2005 to 2015, during which he launched a brutal military campaign against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
