The rulers of the UAE have announced that they have unanimously appointed Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan as President. The decision was taken at a meeting of the country’s seven sheikhs at the Al Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi, state news agency WAM reported.
There were only three coups
This is only the third time that the seven sheikhs have elected a new president since becoming an independent nation.
Sheikh Khalifa was succeeded by his father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first president of the UAE from the existence of the emirate in 1971 until his death on 2 November 2004.
A three-day mourning period has been declared in the United Arab Emirates following the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Business and other activities across the country will be closed during this time.
