The NDA has nominated Draupadi Murmu for the presidency


New Delhi BJP’s parliamentary board on Tuesday named Draupadi Murmu, a tribal leader from Odisha, as the ruling NDA’s candidate for the presidency.

BJP president JP Nadda announced his name at a press conference after a meeting of party seniors.

Murmu, 64, a former governor of Jharkhand, will be the first tribal woman to hold the top constitutional post if elected.

Shortly after Murmu’s name was announced as the BJP-led NDA’s presidential candidate, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the former governor of Jharkhand had dedicated his life to social service and would be a “great president” serving the community and empowering the poor. Dalits as well as neglected, ”Modi said on Twitter.

She has administrative experience and her tenure as governor was excellent, he said.

“I believe he will be the great president of our nation,” Modi said.

Millions of people, especially those who have experienced poverty and have faced adversity, find great strength in the life of Draupadi Murmu, the Prime Minister said. “Her strategic understanding and kind nature will be of great benefit to our country,” Modi said.

Opposition parties had earlier in the day announced former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha as their joint candidate for the post. Voting ends July 18. Sinha will be the unanimous candidate for the presidency from several opposition parties, including the Congress, TMC and Samajwadi Party, the parties said in a joint statement on Tuesday.

Opposition groups called for a unanimous vote in the by-elections, which were convened by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar to decide on a consensus candidate for the presidency.

Earlier, Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson, Gopal Krishna Gandhi, 77, a politician who became a diplomat, withdrew from the race after his name was proposed by a coalition of opposition parties.
