Xi Jinping said that after reuniting with China, true democracy began in Hong Kong

Xi Jinping in Hong Kong: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday praised China’s rule over Hong Kong. He led the celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of Britain’s handover of the city to China. Despite a year of political crackdown calming dissent, Jinping emphasized that democracy was prospering. Xi’s speech was the culmination of a two-day celebration aimed at celebrating the Chinese Communist Party’s takeover of Hong Kong, which has seen major demonstrations for democracy over the past few years. On July 1, 1997, Britain returned Hong Kong to China.

Beijing enacted a national security law on Hong Kong in 2020, ousted the opposition, and most prominent pro-democracy people fled the country, disqualified from office, or imprisoned.

,Beijing worked for the good of Hong Kong,
However, Xi said Beijing has always worked “for the good of Hong Kong.” “After reunification with the motherland, the people of Hong Kong became the masters of their own city,” he said. According to Xi, “Hong Kong’s true democracy began here.”

This is Xi’s first overseas visit since the outbreak of the Kovid-19 epidemic. This is also his first visit to Hong Kong in 2019 after the huge protests in Hong Kong.

At Friday’s ceremony, the new government in the city, led by John Lee, was sworn in. Lee is a former security chief. Following the pro-democracy demonstrations of 2019, action was taken against those who expressed dissatisfaction under his supervision.

,Everyone learned hard,
“After all the storms, everyone has painfully learned that Hong Kong cannot fall into chaos and Hong Kong cannot tolerate chaos,” Xi said. The focus should be on development by removing all confusion, he said.

‘One Nation Two Systems’
Xi said the “one country, two systems” policy has achieved universal success. This policy gives Hong Kong the right to make its own laws and form its own government. “There is no reason to change such a successful system, but it should last a long time,” Xi said.

Xi’s statement seems to be an attempt to reassure the people of Hong Kong that Hong Kong’s independence will continue even after 50 years. He warned that foreign intervention or treason would not be tolerated in Hong Kong’s affairs.
